Brain Injury
Every year in the United States, over 1.5 million people suffer from traumatic brain/head injuries and 50,000 people die from injuries to the brain. A traumatic brain injury is an injury where a person usually strikes his or her head on an object, resulting in serious brain damage. Some common causes of brain injuries are auto accidents, sports injuries, strokes caused by defective medications, and falls.
When a person suffers a brain injury or concussion, the brain’s ability to function may be impaired in the area where the brain injury occurred. For example, if a person were to sustain an injury to the frontal lobe of the cerebrum, they may have impairments or changes with their judgment, inhibitions or sense of smell. The effects of a head injury may be long-lasting or permanent and may require surgery, specialists, rehabilitation, therapy, and assistive devices.
